How to Care for Wrought Iron Patio Furniture
Nothing hurts the look and longevity of wrought iron patio furniture like simple neglect. Untouched dirt and rust can easily mar your patio chairs and tables forever.
Each year, it is important to give your patio chairs and tables a good cleaning for the new season of use.
Wrought iron patio furniture is especially susceptible to rust, even if a manufacturer calls its furniture “rust resistant”.
Basic Care of Your Wrought Iron Patio Furniture
At least once a year, perform the following maintenance procedure on your wrought iron patio furniture:
1. First, remove any glass table tops over a grassy area of your lawn. If you drop the glass, it will be less likely to break!
2. Inspect the metal closely, looking for any nicks, scratches or chips that expose bare wrought iron. The bare wrought metal will soon oxidize and start creating rust which can quickly spread under the paint.
3. Touch up any rust spots using a rust-resistant primer. In general, follow the instructions on the primer. Be sure to rough up the wrought iron in the affected area so that the primer adheres to the iron.
4. If you choose to completely repaint your wrought iron patio furniture, use paint like Rustoleum that is specially formulated for metal. Be sure to rough up the metal with sandpaper so that the paint will adhere!
5. After all of your touchups and/or painting is complete, wash off your wrought iron patio furniture with a soapy water mixture and a soft brush or sponge.
6. Rinse all the chairs and tables with warm water.
7. Finally, using a soft brush or sponge and soapy water, wash off any glass tabletops you set aside earlier. Wipe down afterwards with a clean rag.
Perform this simple maintenance procedure once a season and your wrought iron patio furniture will look great and last several years!
